Choosing the right Kayak: Which Kayak is Best...for You

You can find posts all over the internet about which Kayak is the best, but we believe this is cut short and should read: Which Kayak is Best for YOU. Hopefully by the end of this article you'll have a better sense of understanding which Kayak fits your individual need.

Things to Consider

When choosing a kayak, it's essential to consider the type of water you'll be paddling in and your level of experience. As a beginner, you may want to start with a recreational or sit-on-top kayak as they are easier to use and more stable. As you gain experience, you may want to upgrade to a touring or whitewater kayak. I still use a sit-on-top ocean kayak due to the stability and reliability it provides.

It's also important to consider the length and width of the kayak. Longer kayaks are faster and more efficient at covering long distances, while shorter kayaks are more maneuverable and better suited for navigating rapids. Wider kayaks are more stable, while narrower kayaks are faster and more efficient.

Lastly, consider the material the kayak is made from. Plastic kayaks are affordable, durable, and low maintenance, while composite kayaks are lighter and more efficient, but more expensive and require significantly more maintenance.

Types of Kayaks:

  • Recreational kayaks are stable and easy to use, making them an excellent choice for beginners. However, they tend to be a little slower and not suitable for rough waters.

  • Touring kayaks are efficient at covering long distances and have plenty of storage space for multi-day trips, but can be expensive and harder to maneuver.

  • Whitewater kayaks are designed for navigating fast-moving water and provide a thrilling adventure. These typically have less storage space and can be exhausting to paddle in calm water over a long period of time.

  • Sit-on-top kayaks are stable and easy to use, with more space for gear and accessories. They can be a little less responsive than others, but the tradeoff of stability is one I'll take any day.

So what's the recommendation?

My first Kayak was a yellow Pelican Maxim sit-in kayak and it was awesome. We explored waters all over South Louisiana and Mississippi, including the gulf coast. After which I purchased an off brand sit-on-top ocean kayak. This was it, this was a kayak that was meant for me. As stable as a paddleboard, could handle my full 30 qt Rtic Ice Chest, along with being unsinkable. All this to say, that the first Kayak you try, may not be the right one for you. We did our best to pull together a list of Kayaks that we have tried and recommend for any first time Kayaker. Oh, and we kept budget and availability in mind so you can be on the water quickly and still have some change left for some other gear.
